South Downs National Park is embarking on the design and build of a mobile phone application which allows visitors and residents to access information on things to do and places to see in the newest National Park in Britain.
Users will be able to see what is happening near where they are by clicking on the map view. They will also be able to view a set of suggested days out, from mountain biking the South Downs Way to visiting one of the historic castles. It will also allow visitors to save and share favourites with Facebook and Twitter.
The application will be designed to encourage sustainable forms of tourism by promoting public transport and nature based tourism. The South Downs National Park Authority will be using the app as a visitor management tool, by removing and adding attractions and sites which are suitable for accessing at certain times of the year and also for monitoring popularity.
The app is due to be launched on the iphone in December 2011 and will be available on android platforms in 2012.
The app is being match funded through Collabor8 and through SDNPA funding
